May 2008
 A Message from Doug Sleeter

I’m happy to announce that we are now taking registrations for the 2008 Accounting Software Consulting Conference, held this year on November 10-13 in Phoenix, AZ. I sure hope you’ll join us for this information-packed, fun-filled 4-day event. We’ll have over 60 exhibitors this year, and several hundred accounting professionals. The event has grown tremendously over the past few years, and if you haven’t been able to make it yet, this should be your year. Come and learn while having a great time.

I heard great reviews from Chuck Vigeant’s Reporting Bootcamp, held a couple weeks ago in Houston, and we’re looking for more tricks from Chuck on how to get the most information out of your accounting data.

If you haven’t attended one of our webinars, you should really check them out. These 1- to 2-hour webinars are a very efficient way to learn in depth on a variety of topics that are relevant to your consulting practice. Check our web site for the catalog of topics.

June is going to be quite a busy month. I’ll be attending the CalCPA show in Los Angeles, then the AICPA TECH conference in Las Vegas, then the Intuit Accounting Professional’s Conference in Orlando, and then the BillQuick User’s Conference in Las Vegas. So it will be quite a busy month and I hope to meet you at one or more of these events.

XactPAY Web: A Cash Flow Management Tool

The HartfordLast year, The Hartford launched a new value added product for QuickBooks Payroll named XactPAY Web. It’s a patent-pending, payroll-based workers’ compensation premium billing service that allows a business to pay their workers’ comp premium on a pay-as-you-go basis. The benefit is that it calculates insurance premiums for a Hartford workers’ compensation policy based on actual payrolls and withdraws that amount directly from the insured’s bank account with every payroll run through QuickBooks. It is available as a workers’ compensation billing service at no additional charge for Hartford policyholders.

 Tricks of The Trade

Every day, members of The Sleeter Group Consultants Network tackle the day-to-day problems of their clients in the real world. The following is an example problem and solution that surfaced this month on our Sleeter Group Consultants Network E-Mail Group.

Question: Has anyone experienced missing part of  a list ? My client’s customer list stops at ‘W’ even though there are customers in the system beyond ‘W’. I closed/reopended the file, verified data and the last part of the customer list is still missing. Any ideas as to why this is happening or what the fix might be?

Laurie O’Neil responded: I had this happen with a brand new client in QuickBooks Accountants Edition 2008, we were creating a new file and we imported the customer list in from the old file. I added a couple of new clients which began with the letter "S" and the list stopped at R. I verified and everything came back fine. I was bewildered. I had never had this happen before creating a brand new file. Ultimately what I ended up doing was rebuilding the file anyways and this fixed the problem.

Jeanne Miller Tarazevits suggested: One thing to try is to create and then restore a Portable Company file. Also resorting the lists might help.

Wayne Higdon added: This missing list problem could be related to this…. In a new file, I first added a Customer with Quick Add. After that, I couldn’t see customers in the Customer Center but could see them in some drop-down lists. QuickAdd turned out to be the cause of the problem. When I deleted the customer list and started again without QuickAdd, everything worked. This was in Premier 2008.

Matt Clark weighed in: What happens when you resort the list? You could try adding a column to the customer list (like “phone number”, or “Bill to 2”, something with data in it) and sort by that column. Do the Clients below “W” show up then? Also, what happens on the reports when you print a customer list? Sometimes QuickBooks gets confused with list tables. The fix is to resort in order to fix the issue (verify and rebuild won’t fix the issue).

Final Response: Thank you all for your input. I will try the various tactics and let you know what worked. I love this group – such a great network of people willing to share their knowledge and experience.
