Happy new year!

This month we're releasing our review of the new features in QuickBooks 2006, along with some helpful tips for getting it install and running efficiently.

REMINDER: Update your client's payroll tax items (SUI, and others as needed) for the new year.

We're interested in hearing your experiences so far with QuickBooks 2006. Please answer our quick 4-question survey here: Click here to take survey.

 What’s New in QuickBooks 2006

QuickBooks 2006 is an upgrade to Intuit’s market-leading accounting software product. The 2006 version is the most significant upgrade to QuickBooks in several years and we're very impressed.

Although we’ve had several reports from users having trouble getting the software installed and working smoothly in their environments (usually older, or out-of-date windows systems), we believe most of the issues are (or will be) overcome by updating incompatible or older systems and software. Undoubtedly, there will also be fixes coming from Intuit in the form of downloadable updates that will resolve issues identified by these users.

Some of the installation problems might be overcome by reading the sections in this document and fully understanding how QuickBooks 2006 is different from the earlier versions.

 Tricks of the Trade
Tricks of the Trade

Every day, members of The Sleeter Group's Consultants Network tackle the day-to-day problems of their clients in the real world. The following are some of the more general problems and solutions that surfaced this month on our "Sleeter Group's Consultants Network Forum".

Updating QuickBooks 2006 R3
Douglas Sleeter advises:
"If you have a networked environment with QuickBooks 2006, beware of the following issue when updating to R3.

If you update a client to R3 before updating your server, you might not be able to open the company file until you update the server. The message says you don't have access privileges for the file, but it really means that you need to update the server.

To fix this, open QuickBooks on the server and install the R3 update. It will require a reboot. Then, you will be able to open the file from any R3 client.

It turns out, your client can be R2 with the server updated to R3, but the server cannot be R2 if your clients are R3.

Easy to fix, but it's scary when you get the error message that says you cannot open the data file."

Networking
"Okay, I have finally got my first client who needs to network two computers, and I am supposed to order the computers. What do I need in additional hardware or software for networking? We were going for XP home edition because Dell has a very low priced Dimension 1100, but I don't know if that will be enough for the networking. They will only need to run QBES on both computers and add MS Office Small Business to one of them."

Jamie Burns responds:
"You need to advise the client to purchase windows xp pro, I think the additional cost is only $150.00 at the most, and this will be a much more stable network system, this should provide the shares that you need for this network."

Converting QB Enterprise to QB Accountants Edition
"I think I know the answer to this, but wanted to make sure I was correct.  A client of a tech person I know wants to convert from 2005 Enterprise to the Accountants Edition of QuickBooks.  Any suggestions?"

Dawn Scranton, CQA writes:
"I sent Karl [Irvin of QuickBooks to QuickBooks Data Transfer] an email, and here is his reply:

Our Data Transfer Utility can transfer from ES to Pro/Premier.
Following is some info on the process.

-----------------------------------------
The Data Transfer Utility can transfer data from Enterprise 5 or 6 to Pro/Premier 2005 or 2006. You will need to

1. Have your source company open in ES when exporting data.
2. Close the connection to ES (row 3 of the utility)
3. Open your destination company in QuickBooks Pro.
4. Import the data.

You can see a video clip of this process at http://www.q2q.us/dtuvideos.htm (video number 7). See the other videos for installation, typical use etc.

For what can and cannot be transferred, see http://www.q2q.us/dtudatatypes.htm
