| A Message from Doug Sleeter | ||
The big news this month is the release of all of our 2006 QuickBooks teaching systems.
The 2006 Learning QuickBooks Step-by-Step Teaching System is now available for order on our web store. Thanks to our great team of QuickBooks experts, writers, proofers, and reviewers, we have a very high-quality product that helps accountants and consultants teach seminars without having to reinvent the wheel. These books are combined with sample data files, end-of-chapter reviews and tests, and additional test banks that helps you test the students’ retention of the material. The teacher resources include PowerPoint slides, instructor manuals, solution data files, seminar planning and marketing resources, and additional testing tools.
Our 2006 QuickBooks Complete college textbook is also now shipping. This text is being used by colleges throughout the country, and it combines the content from the Step-by-Step books into one complete 830 page book covering nearly every aspect of QuickBooks. In addition, there is a comprehensive "problem" at the end of the book that can be used as the final exam, or can be used to verify QuickBooks skills during the hiring process. The problem requires the student to enter 2 months of transactions and print reports that show they did the entries correctly.
If you give seminars, teach classes, or are considering getting into the training area, you should attend our special all-day train-the-trainer seminar on using these materials to grow your practice. It will be held on "day 4" of our conference, that is November 10, in Las Vegas. Register on our web site today.
Our team on the training books this year included Amy Vetter, Pat Carson, Jyoti Chandra, Deborah Pembrook, Tommy Stephens, Carl Gill, Margie Levinson, and Denise Duplinski. Thanks to all of them for the great work!

If performance becomes an issue or you decide you do not want to keep detailed transactions for prior years, you can "condense" a QuickBooks data file using the Clean Up Data utility. The Clean Up Data process is pretty involved, but if you successfully condense your file, you should experience better performance from QuickBooks. However, before you do that, you should consider other causes of sluggish performance. If you find that QuickBooks is slowing down, check the following list of potential causes…

Every day, members of The Sleeter Group’s Consultants Network tackle the day-to-day problems of their clients in the real world. The following are some of the more general problems and solutions that surfaced this month on our “Sleeter Group’s Consultants Network Forum”.
Importing Data From Other Accounting Systems into QuickBooks Are there things I should consider first….I would love to hear from anyone who has already done this successfully.
Hi, I’ve a client who was using the Intacct accounting system and wants to convert to QuickBooks. I think I can obtain the historical data in a txt file, can I import into QB? Is it easy to accomplish?
Chuck Vigeant responds:
We have worked with importing Intacct (and other accounting software) data into QB desktop, and each time it was a bear. Additionally, the QBOnline SDK does not have the ability to every type of transaction – deposits would be one example.
In general, ANY historical import into QB is difficult at best; and in some cases it is cheaper to hire a data entry person to re-enter the data. If you have too much data to do that, then consider entering summaries of the data. I discourage clients whenever I can about importing “foreign data” into QuickBooks.
Over the years I have been involved with hundreds of accounting software conversions and after 6 months or so, they say “what old accounting system?” Having the historical comparison is certainly desirable, but doing the comparison manually for a short time is only a small inconvenience compared with the hassle and costs of importing.
I couldn’t even begin to list the problems you’ll encounter if you attempt this process – not enough room (laughter). Start fresh with beginning balances, and move on is my advice.
