October 2008
 Message from Doug Sleeter

Greetings,

This is Doug Sleetera challenging year for the economy and with all the uncertainty about the future, I wanted to reflect on the current situation and give you my thoughts the near future in the accounting software consulting business.

I’m not an economist, but here is what I see here at The Sleeter Group, and what I’m hearing from our partners, both in the consulting business and in the software business. The news is not all bad, but if you listen to the press, they seem to be saying we’re heading for doom. But I urge you to focus on what you know and what is happening for real instead of what the press says. People tend to over react in times like this and when that happens, there is a snowball effect that makes it much worse.

We have been in business for nearly 15 years and we’ve worked closely with accounting software consultants through all of our years. We’ve seen cycles before that were challenging (2001-2002 was no picnic), but even though there are pull-backs in spending from end-user clients, many of those clients take these lean years to retrench, build their internal systems, and prepare for the next business uptrend. As the clients retrench, they need consultants that make them more efficient and profitable.

The other news this month is that we’ve recently added a new member to our team. Please help me welcome David Horwitz as our Community Manager at The Sleeter Group.  David’s enthusiasm for the accounting software consulting community fits right in here and he will be working hard to build and enhance our Sleeter Group Consultants Network.

Introducing David Horwitz -The Sleeter Group's new "Community Manager"

We David Horwitzare pleased to introduce David Horwitz, the newest member of the Sleeter Group team. David is the new Sleeter Group "Community Manager". David will focus on nurturing and growing the Sleeter Group Consultants Network.

David has worked over the past three years at Intuit as Accounting Professionals Relationship Manager. In this role, David grew the Intuit Accountant Speakers Bureau from 30 to over 100 members, and enhanced Intuit’s relationships with national and state CPA societies and accounting associations and their local chapters by enhancing communications and providing them with training services for their members. Prior to working at Intuit, David managed the Stanford Advanced Project Management professional education program at Stanford University. He has also held various strategic roles in marketing and alliances at Silicon Graphics, Baltimore Gas & Electric, and Infinite Technologies.

SGCN member Mary Brettmann on MISys

Mary Brettmann, Mary Brettmana long time Sleeter Group Consultant Network Member, Pro-Advisor, and now Intuit Solution Provider says, “MISys really is an effective tool for manufacturers and QuickBooks Pro-Advisors should consider MISys SBM for their manufacturing customers who need production scheduling and master planning.”

Brettmann, a veteran of finance and treasury experience for fortune 500 companies should know. She has successfully installed MISys SBM in three of her customers manufacturing sites and is working on the forth installation.

“There are other manufacturing systems out there”, said Brettmann, “But MISys SBM has the more extensive manufacturing functions with forecasting, serial/lot tracking, production control and multiple costing methods.”

 Tricks of the Trade

Every day, members of The Sleeter Group Consultants Network tackle the day-to-day problems of their clients in the real world. The following is an example problem and solution that surfaced this month on our Sleeter Group Consultants Network E-Mail Group.

Question: I’m working with a retail store that sells products on EBay. They would like to keep inventory and have barcode scanning ability. QuickBooks Point of Sale is the way to go, but how would I integrate the sales of products into QuickBooks Financial to track the inventory on hand. What are my solutions?

Diane Krause answers: If you are unfamiliar with QuickBooks Point of Sale, then you should know that if you use this system with QuickBooks Financial Software, all inventory data is kept in the QB POS side (including inventory on hand). No detail for inventory is passed from QB POS to QuickBooks Financial, only total amount or journal entries that affect the inventory account when items are purchased within the QB POS system and subsequently sold. QB POS does have a bar code scanner that I have several clients using within QB POS very successfully. Hope this helps.

Follow-up Question: How does EBay integrate with QB POS for each sale item and reduce the inventory?

Steve Green responds: You will have to use the Homestead version of Prostores, not EBay Prostores. Intuit owns Homestead. The sales come down to QB POS from the store.

Editor’s Note: For more on QuickBooks Point of Sale, The Sleeter Group is offering a pre-conference session on QuickBooks Point of Sale Consulting. For more on online stores and integration with QuickBooks, we are offering a pre-conference session on ECommerce with PDG Commerce Software.
