March 2010
 Message from Doug

I hopeDoug Sleeter all of you are doing well with the crunch that always comes this time of year. Of course, these busy times are a good time to re-focus on how much efficient technology and business processes can make the difference between success and, well, something less than that.

By now, you may have heard about Intuit’s Hosting Program, announced a few weeks ago. With the arrival of this long-anticipated program, we think the QuickBooks consulting world finally has a green light to embrace QuickBooks hosting, and that we can begin recommending it for clients. We’ve been watching this area closely and we continue to recommend it as a great step towards taking your practice to cloud computing.

We’ve begun our review process for our 2011 Awesome Add-on Award winners. Each year, we scrutinize the third party developed add-ons to QuickBooks and choose a select few to receive our Awesome Add-on Award. We’ve just opened the nomination process, so if you have a favorite add-on application you would like to suggest for a review, we want to hear about it. Visit www.sleeter.com/awesomeaddons for more details.

We’ve increased our work lately on search engine optimization (SEO) and improving our Web presence. I want to thank Ellen Ferlazzo of Sprezzatura Systems for her help as we, like so many businesses, try to improve our Web presence and search engine results. Ellen consults for companies such as WebEx and VMware, but you may want to follow her for tips on search engine optimization. You can learn more at http://www.sprez.com.

Chuck Vigeant's Reporting and Technology Corner

In this two part series, Chuck Vigeant discusses two ways of approaching Sales and Tax by Shipping State within Excel – one without a pivot table, and one with a pivot table.  In this second part, he demonstrates the power of pivot tables.

This article explores the ability to generate a Sales by Shipping State report in Excel. He shows how to create a complete report that will give you total sales, total taxable sales, total non-taxable sales, and total sales – all by shipping state, including filters for customer, customer taxable code, items, dates, etc.
