July 2010
 Message from Doug Sleeter

Yesterday Doug Sleeterwas our first regional seminar in years and I am so impressed with how accountants and consultants are striving to improve clients’ businesses. We met here in the San Francisco Bay Area (in Pleasanton, CA – our home base) and had a day packed with technologies, products, services, and best practices for taking clients online.

If you weren’t there yesterday, check out the article below for future dates and locations. Thanks to the generosity of our five Seminar sponsors, including Method Integration, Bill.com, SmartVault, InsynQ, and Sage, we have significantly lowered your cost to attend.

This seminar is a full-day drill down on how taking your clients (and your practice!) online really changes everything about how you provide accounting services, and what type of services you can provide. From automating payments for vendors and customers, to online document management, to leveraging hosted desktop application software and online customer portals, this seminar is packed full of practical tips for helping you move your clients to cloud computing.

In other news, we’ve just released our QuickBooks Complete 2010 college textbook. Originally published in 2002, this textbook has become a staple in college campuses and vocational training schools around the country. Our textbooks are known for their thorough coverage – teaching accounting along with the software. Our secret is that we teach beginning QuickBooks users what we know they need to make your job easier. If you teach or know a teacher in your area – make sure to let them know that we provide teachers a free evaluation copy.

How Nexus Confusion Affects QuickBooks Users

Did Avalarayou know that your clients are obligated to collect and remit sales tax where they conduct business?  Do you fully understand nexus and the potential impact on your clients’ businesses if they don’t understand it?

If the answer is no, take a moment to discover how simple it is to manage nexus obligations and become sales tax compliant.  By fully understanding this obligation, your firm will have the ability to recommend appropriate solutions to clients, increasing their reliance on your services, and ultimately reducing their exposure to future negative sales tax audits.

Paying sales tax may be inevitable, but the hassle is not. Selecting a web-based transactional tax management solution that performs behind the scenes of financial or ecommerce applications is critical to comprehensively automate the sales tax compliance function.  The selected service should work seamlessly behind the scenes, should integrate with your client’s existing business financial application and must automate the entire tax compliance functions of their business.

 Tricks of the Trade

Every day, members of the Sleeter Group Consultants Network tackle the day-to-day problems of their clients in the real world. The following is an example problem and solution that surfaced this month on our Sleeter Group Consultants Network Experts Forum.

Question: Does anyone know what would cause memorized transactions to no longer automatically record? My client has 40 (invoices) memorized transactions that automatically record on the first of each month. When he opens QuickBooks, it gives him the prompt to enter them, but when he hits ok, he gets a message they were not recorded. The memorized transactions have not been modified. We tried doing a file rebuild but that was no help. We have been using this system seamlessly for over a year until now. Anyone?

Nancy Gomez responded: One of more of the transactions is "broken" so the entire group won’t post. Try doing a rebuild and see if that fixes it – worst case scenario is to try to post each one individually until you find the broken one. Delete it and setup again and it should work.

Elaine Mott added: If the "number remaining" is 0, they will not record. The "number remaining" field must be blank or have a number in it.

Joan Shumaker weighed in: Sometimes the memorized transactions become "corrupted"-I’ve seen this happen. Try deleting one of the memorized transactions and replacing it with a new one. Also, review the A/R and balance sheet reports to make sure QuickBooks isn’t out of balance.

Final Response: Thanks, I will pass it on.
