 Message from Doug Sleeter  

This month, the Doug SleeterSleeter Group celebrates its 15th year in business. We started in 1994 teaching QuickBooks and Quicken on DOS and have evolved into a network of leading accounting professionals.

To mark this milestone for The Sleeter Group, I took some time to reflect on how we started and what we did to develop into the company you know today.

We hope you will take a moment to read our story from 1994 to the present.

In the last 15 years, I’ve met some remarkable people. I want to sincerely thank our members, our clients, our fantastic staff, our friends at Intuit and all of our QuickBooks add-on partners.

 New Sleeter Group Website  

We recently upgraded the www.sleeter.com website providing our visitors a brand new look, improved navigation and functionality. Check it out! http://www.sleeter.com

New Site Highlights:

  • Improved Navigation – We have made it easier to find what you are looking for! All links are in categorical drop-downs from the top of the page.
  • Enhanced FTP Service ("File Folders") – Sleeter Group Consultant Network Members now have more control over the FTP service we offer as a part of The Sleeter Group Consultant Network Membership. Members can manage file folders with less client involvement saving time for both the member and their client. (Also: website users who are not clients of Sleeter Group Consultants no longer have access to file folders).
  • Improved Product Listings and Support – You can now review the various QuickBooks resources and tools that we offer on our site (or visit our product store at www.sleeterstore.com). Product support files are also easier to find and access.

 Chuck's Reporting Corner: Sales Performance Analyzer  

This month Chuck Vigeant reveals a glimpse of the brand new Sales Performance Analyzer tool released last week to QuickBooks Enterprise Customers, and current non-Enterprise beta testers. Last year, Chuck was independently contracted by Intuit as a data architect, an expert in Business Objects technology, and a QuickBooks/Sybase data analyst; he worked with a team of Product and Production Managers, database engineers, asset design engineers, and Quality Assurance personnel that delivered the Business Analysis Offering. Here is his bird’s eye view of this brand new tool.

 New Opportunities for Members

We at The Sleeter Group are continually striving to create new and expanded opportunities for our customers, including the members of our Sleeter Group Consultants Network. We are constantly investigating new VAR programs and other partnerships. Last month, we began a partnership with CPE Link to offer discounted webinars to our members. Our full schedule will be announced soon. In the coming months, we will be announcing some exciting additional VAR opportunities, enabling our members to expand their offerings and services.

Our new Website has many added benefits for members and other customers of The Sleeter Group, such as more searchable content under the Find-a-Consultant page and a better layout of the member’s profile page. The “My SGCN Membership” page offers a consolidated list of membership benefits, including easy access to updating your member profile. As mentioned above, we’ve made significant improvements to the File Folders area.

We’ve had a terrific response to our member surveys and want to thank all of you who took the time to offer feedback. These surveys help us fine tune the services we offer.

 Sleeter Group Annual Conference Update  

Mark Your Calendars and Plan to Attend the 2009 ASCC Conference in Orlando, Florida!

The Sleeter Group’s 6th annual Conference will be held in Orlando, Florida November 9-12, 2009 at the Wyndham Orlando Resort. The hotel room rate for the conference is ONLY $139 per night! On Monday November 9th we will offer our popular "pre conference" full day in depth training sessions. The three day main conference will be held Tuesday, Nov 10th to Thursday Nov 12th. The conference will provide at least 32 CPEs.

In each of the next few newsletters we’ll bring you an interview with one of these award winners. This month, we interviewed Jeanne Tarazevits, winner of the Sleeter Group Prolific Poster Award.

How would you describe your practice?
It’s a Software Consulting Practice, which keeps things interesting. Being a member of the Sleeter Group Consultants Network has saved me from becoming an accounting practice, which I would have found boring.

How has the SGCN group benefitted your practice?
It’s opened doors to all the third part add-ons, and how much more fun life can be solving problems as opposed to doing maintenance work. After my first Sleeter Group conference, I went out and found subcontract bookkeepers and got rid of all my maintenance accounts. I became strictly a project person. It’s been a lot more fun.

What would you like to share with our readers?
People ask me how I have time to post to the group, and I tell them it is an important part of my social life. I remember one time I was working 7 days a week, 10 or 12 hours a day. I received a file for a tax return that was so far away from being ready for a tax return, it was incredible. It suffered from bad bookkeeping syndrome. I was able to send it off to fellow Sleeter Group network member Kathy Coffman in Cleveland, OH to fix for me. This enabled me to attend to the Enterprise Solutions show. It was a life saver.

I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me. I had a rosy glow all evening after I got the award.

 MISys Releases Labor Tracker software  

Manufacturing Information Systems (MISys, Inc.) has recently released a new module for its MISys® Small Business Manufacturing software product called Labor Tracking.MISys

The MISys SBM Labor Tracking module is intended to capture actual time spent by production workers and to log the actual time against MISys SBM jobs and manufacturing orders.

“For many years, our sales force has had to field questions about how our software keeps track of the actual time spent on production orders.” said Dave Brown, President of MISys.

“Until now, the answer has always been to record the time on a written timesheet, then manually transpose the entries into MISys SBM as dispense transactions for resource-type items.” Labor Tracking uses the same resource-type items representing various labor rates for production workers, but the software completely automates the collection and posting of labor quantities.

The MISys SBM Labor Tracking software can be installed on any compatible computer where production time needs to be logged, whether that computer is on the company LAN, or across the Internet. Since Labor Tracking communicates directly with the MISys SBM Server module, there is no need to have the MISys SBM Client module installed for labor tracking.

The labor tracking software maintains a list of employees whose work you wish to track. The software can launch a timer window for any employee; counting the hours, minutes, and seconds expired while the timer is active. When the task is completed and the window closed, Labor Tracker posts the expired time as a dispense resource transaction for the specified job or manufacturing order. “With Labor Tracking installed, users can be sure that their jobs and manufacturing orders reflect the cost of the actual labor expended on them. We think this is going to very popular with users who wish to compare estimated versus actual costs for their production orders” added Brown.

MISys SBM Labor Tracking is compatible with MISys Small Business Manufacturing version 3.0 and above and has a suggested list price of $500.  Tricks of The Trade  

Every day, members of The Sleeter Group Consultants Network tackle the day-to-day problems of their clients in the real world. The following is an example problem and solution that surfaced this month on our Sleeter Group Consultants Network E-Mail Group.

Question: I just went to see a potential new client and I found the chart of accounts to be pretty interesting.  Many of the accounts had a ? or a / between the account # and the account name.  What would cause this and what do I need to do to fix it? 

Phil Warren replied: See if they might have an additional language set up in Windows. I had an Asian client that did not have English set up as the ‘master’ language and the Chart of Accounts looked as you described.

Final Response: This is the Answer. Thank you, Phil! My client has QB Pro and the main language is not English. When I took the backup and restored on my computer, all was fine. Isn’t this interesting? This is just the best group ever.
