Happy summer. It’s been a very busy year, and the whole online world is finally taking off. We’ve just about finished evaluating over 50 products for the 2011 Awesome Add-on awards, and there are some very exciting products coming into the market.
As we’re preparing for our annual conference, I couldn’t be more excited about the keynotes and sessions we are planning. I’ve been hard at work with various speakers to make sure each session is as informative, useful, and current as possible.
We have five keynotes planned, including new faces as well as some regular favorites. Rick Richardson will present Technology Futures: 2010 -2015. Rick has an unbroken 30 year record of predicting our technology future. We’ll be able to see for ourselves if that record extends toward 35 years! Leslie Shiner will be presenting Delivering Dynamite Client Services. If you attended last year’s Conference, you know that she could also discuss delivering dynamite keynotes! Randy Johnston will give a Technology Update. This is always an incredibly popular presentation, full of ideas and usable gems that you can adopt in your own practice. Darren Root returns to present a keynote on Leading Firms through the Next Generation of Change. And Shane Hamby will be back with us again this year to give insight into What’s New In QuickBooks.

Question: What are the benefits and problems associated with using inventory subitems to categorize inventory available in multiple colors?
Does anyone have suggestions for blocking transactions to the parent inventory items?
Kathy Coffman responded within 10 minutes with: I like option 2 for reporting purposes and grouping these like items together. I don’t know about blocking parent accounts. For my clients, I type a description such as: **ERROR – PLEASE SELECT SUBITEM
Karen Siewert added: I love your comment on ERROR! My suggestion is to use a Point of Sale system! It is far more robust and will eliminate your need to configure the **ERROR Comment!
Laura Dion chimed in: I use a description, "Parent item: Do Not Use!!!" (similar to the ERROR idea). Another idea – if you put a period in front of each parent item, when auto-filling the item field – typing "20" will only bring up the subitems as available options.
Final response: Thank you! I am using subitems for tracking Inventory items in multiple colors.
