August 2009
 Message from Doug Sleeter

First Doug Sleeter of all, let me wish you all a happy summer. Every August, Sherrill and I get together with family in Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park in California to enjoy the high Sierras. Hiking among the ancient trees helps keep things in perspective and helps recharge the batteries. As John Muir said, "Come to the woods, for here is rest. There is no repose like that of the green deep woods."

Now that I’m back to the reality of the business world,  I am reminded that most of us need to stay connected to our businesses while travelling. I’ve long advocated using paperless technologies as the first step towards moving online, so I am happy to announce our partnership with SmartVault, the online paperless solution for QuickBooks users. This partnership will help Sleeter Group Consultants Network members and their clients manage documents online. Members will hear more about SmartVault in our upcoming members conference call. Non-members can visit our solution partner page in a few weeks to learn more.

We’ve also been working hard to evaluate the 2010 Awesome Add-on Award recipients, which will be announced at our Conference in November. There are some really exciting products coming out this year! We can’t wait to announce our winners, and we hope you’ll be there for it.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Trading Services Between Customers and Vendors

For example, if you sell the customer taxable Items, or if you buy inventory Items in the trade…

A Note from our Community Manager, David Horwitz

Hi, everyone!  We’d David Horwitzlike to take a minute to thank some local Sleeter Group and QuickBooks user groups that have invited us to come to their local meetings and chat with their members.  This is a real pleasure for us, as it gives us the opportunity to meet face-to-face with folks in the accounting software consulting world.  We are happy to make ourselves available to members who host these types of meetings, either live or on the phone, so please contact us if we can help your organization move forward, or even start a group such as this!

We’re in the dog days of summer, with school starting just around the corner or having started already.  It’s time for you to get back to work!  But by November, you’re going to need a break… Read the full article by clicking the link below.

 Tricks of the Trade

Every day, members of The Sleeter Group Consultants Network tackle the day-to-day problems of their clients in the real world. The following is an example problem and solution that surfaced this month on our Sleeter Group Consultants Network E-Mail Group.

Question: Does anyone have any suggestions for a company that rents items and reserves inventory for future use? They need to use their inventory next week, then have it returned and bill for the rental, at the same time they need to reserve the inventory for sometime in the future. Thanks in advance

Stuart McClain answered: You can use a Sales Orders to reserve the inventory – then just make it inactive once items are returned. Invoice only for the Rental Fees.

Follow-up Question: How would you handle the situation in QuickBooks Pro since it does not have sales orders?

Stuart McClain added: Buy Premier!

Final Reply: A big thank you to Stuart! This was a great hint.
