The Sleeter Group Marks 15th Year
The Sleeter Group celebrates its 15th anniversary this month!
Pleasanton, CA - February 24, 2009 -
The Sleeter Group started in 1994 when QuickBooks (the DOS version!) was new in the market. Just for fun, I began teaching evening courses in Quicken and QuickBooks at a local adult education school near our home in Pleasanton, CA. My classes began with 15 to 20 couples who had decided to “get their financial act together” by automating their household finances. It was SO rewarding to help these people move into the “new generation” of computer and accounting software users. Over time our student population grew to include local small business owners, many of whom became our consulting clients as they began using Quicken and QuickBooks in their small businesses.
As our courses grew in popularity and as QuickBooks gained marketshare, we expanded our course offerings across the United States. At that point, Intuit adopted our early textbooks for their first educational courseware. Over the years, our course workbooks grew from 30 pages into the multi-hundred page textbooks they are today. These textbooks are now used by hundreds of colleges and numerous private training firms for their QuickBooks training courses.
In 1998, we began to focus on helping accounting professionals. The timing was perfect because many accountants were flooded with requests from their clients for help with QuickBooks, and many of them had not yet learned much about it. We published the QuickBooks Consultant’s Reference Guide to help consultants with troubleshooting and best practices for setup and workflows for their QuickBooks clients. This reference guide continues to be one of our bestselling books.
In 2000, we ventured into the conference arena, which has become a major part of our business. Within three years, we had expanded the conference to include QuickBooks add-ons. We now have over 50 software vendors in our exhibit hall, hundreds of attendees, and 50 sessions taught by 30 industry experts. Intuit is a major sponsor of this event, and together we provide cutting edge training that can’t be found anywhere else.
Also in 2000, we created the Sleeter Group Consultants Network. The Network now has over 600 members (and growing) from nearly every state in the US as well as Canada, the Caribbean, and England. Our members are experts in QuickBooks consulting, and many have also become IT consultants and have expanded into add-on software such as Fishbowl Inventory, BillQuick, and MISys. Our members’ Yahoo! Group forum is the most active group I’ve seen in the small business accounting world. Every day, our members use this venue to help each other with complicated and unusual client issues. I think our company’s success is a testament to the power of "social networking," even before social networking was in vogue.
So here we are, fifteen years into what has turned out to be a remarkable journey. Each day is still as fun and rewarding as teaching those evening classes fifteen years ago. We have many goals yet to achieve and we look forward to the rest of the journey with you! A sincere thank you to our clients, our fantastic staff, our friends at Intuit, and all of our QuickBooks add-on partners, who have helped us build The Sleeter Group into one of the most respected companies in the small business accounting marketplace.
