QuickBooks Freezes up

Summary

Everytime I go into the bank rec module, the computer freezes. You can terminate QB without a hard reboot, but every time you select the bank rec screen, it freezes up. This symptom of freezing up could be when going to any screen in QuickBooks. That is, you may find this behavior in other areas, not just the bank reconciliation.

Question

I need some help to resolve a problem for a client using QuickBooks.

Everytime he goes into the bank rec module, the computer freezes. You can terminate QB without a hard reboot.

I checked the integrity of the data and did a rebuild without eliminating the problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled QBs.

The problem still exists. How can I resolve this problem ?

Answer

The problem here turned out to be that the user had set up a dual monitor system. He opened the QB programs and moved the bank reconciliation screens over to the second monitor.

Then, after doing a bank rec on the dual monitor system, he backed up the QB file and restored to a second computer that had only one monitor.

When selecting Reconcile in QB on the single monitor system, QB placed the reconcile screen in the same location it was last used. This meant that the bank rec screen where you enter the ending bank statement balance was opening up on the second monitor – which the single monitor system did not have! The system appeared to lock up, because the cursor was on the second screen too.

To fix this, hold down the shift key and then select the bank rec function. This causes QB to reposition the bank rec screen in the center of the visible screen.

Now, the bank rec screen will be visible, and you can proceed with reconciling. Also, the next time you go into the bank rec screen, it will appear in the center of your screen.

This symptom could also happen when you bring up ANY screen in QuickBooks. If the last time it was open, it was placed outside of the visible area of your current screen, you'll have the same situation. This is because QuickBooks always remembers where you put your windows, and it tries to keep them where you put them.

Holding the shift key down when opening a window will cause it to be centered on the current visible screen area.
