Lost Password
Summary
How can I recover a lost or forgotten QuickBooks password?
Question
Answer
There are three password types in QuickBooks. The Administrator password is the password that allows you unlimited privileges. The person who is logged in as the Administrator can add/change/delete Users of the file. The Administrator assigns a password to each new user when setting up the User account within QuickBooks. This User password is required to log in under as a User of the file. The Closing Date password is used to lock the file so that users cannot make changes to the file on or before a specified date.
If your client loses the password for one of the users of the file, the Administrator can reset the password by logging in and modifying the User record in the Set up Users screen.
If your client loses the Closing Date password, the Administrator can reset the password by setting a new closing date password in the Set Closing Date preferences screen.
If your client loses the Administrator password, you will not be able to recover it without help. Go to www.lostpassword.com for a utility that you can use to read the administrator password from the QBW file. In addition, Intuit provides a password removal service.
