Chuck's Reporting Corner April 2008

Chuck Vigeant M.Ed. - 04/28/2008

Chuck Vigeant has been known to say, “We can pull anything out of QuickBooks – including the kitchen sink”. In reality, he says, this is only true for about 90% of the data available in QuickBooks, and for about 80% of the report requests we receive. In this month’s article, Chuck discusses the caveats of a few of the most requested reports: Balance Sheet by Class, Profit by Vendor and Commissions on Profit.

Fishbowl vs. Velocity

Jeanne Miller Tarazevits, CPA, CITP, Tara Consulting Group - 04/28/2008

Inventory can present unique management challenges and usually represents a significant portion of an enterprise’s assets. Simple inventory operations, such as those with a single warehouse, limited part numbers, and no regulatory needs, can manage with QuickBooks alone. However, life is seldom simple and every client is unique. Over the past few years, a dozen inventory and manufacturing add-ons have been developed to meet advanced inventory management requirements. We should be aware of these products and their relative strengths and weaknesses. The focus of this article is to two such products, Fishbowl and Velocity.

Labor Burden and Profits

Diane Gilson - 01/14/2008

We all know that employees are an expensive, but necessary, component of doing business. Company owners count on an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay, and have a right to expect both service and value from staff and direct labor employees in return for their compensation. Additionally, to make a profit, every company needs to accurately determine employees’ costs and what to charge for their time.

What is this amount in POS inventory adjustment (Document offset) and why should I care?

William English - 07/17/2007

As a QuickBooks Point of Sale ProAdvisor, one thing I can count on when I go into a new client, not using a POS ProAdvisor, is seeing an amount in POS inventory Adjustment expense account (Document offset in prior versions). Most clients don’t understand how these transactions occur and how to prevent unintended entries.

Doug Sleeter - 05/22/2007

Meet John David King of Fishbowl Inventory. John David is the Value Added Reseller Manager at Fishbowl Inventory and has been assigned the task of developing a professional group of resellers across the country to represent Fishbowl Inventory. He has been thrilled with the amazing new members that have joined the Fishbowl VAR program since the alliance with The Sleeter Group. Please feel free to contact John David (john.david@fishbowlinventory.com) if you are interested in joining the Fishbowl VAR program. I recently asked John to answer a few questions that will help consultants who need inventory solutions for their clients. We all know there is no one-size-fits-all solution, so I asked John David to help us learn how to approach the process of identifying and qualifying whether Fishbowl Inventory is the right choice.

Tuning Performance of QuickBooks on a Network

Doug Sleeter - 05/21/2007

If you use QuickBooks 2006 or higher on a network, here are some best practices for “tuning” your environment to provide the best performance. The issues discussed in this article apply to QuickBooks Pro, Premier, and Enterprise, regardless of the edition you are running. The recommendations apply to anyone who is hosting more than 5 simultaneous “sessions” between a server (or peer) computer and other clients on the network. It may even apply if these sessions are not multi-user access to the same data file. This also applies to Windows XP and/or Windows 2003 server, and has not yet been tested in a Windows Vista environment.
